Time for a Little Skincare Spring Cleaning (Yes, Even in Fall)
I just did a deep clean in my bathroom and threw away a trash bag full of old skincare, body products and makeup products. This is something I try to do at least twice a year because let’s be honest — even I’m guilty of holding onto that “almost empty” serum or that perfect-shade lipstick that’s seen better days. Here’s the thing: skincare and makeup don’t last forever, and using products past their prime can do more harm than good.
💡 Why Shelf Life Matters
Every skincare product has an expiration date — even the fancy ones. Once opened, air, light, and bacteria start to break down the formulation, weakening its effectiveness and potentially irritating your skin.
-
Performance ingredients (like Vitamin C, Retinol, and Peptides) lose potency over time. That means fewer results for your skin.
-
Preservatives degrade too, allowing bacteria and mold to sneak in. Which is just gross!
-
Textures and scents change — if it smells “off,” feels clumpy, or separates, it’s time to say goodbye.
- Oils turn rancid, causing oxidation and free radical damage.
🧴 Fresh is Best for Your Skin Health
Your skin deserves products that are alive with actives — not expired potions past their glow-giving prime. When you use skincare within its recommended time frame:
-
You get the full strength of the ingredients, which is what gives your skin results.
-
Your skin barrier stays protected, not compromised.
-
Your results are predictable, safe, and effective.
Think of it like fresh food — would you eat week-old sushi just because it’s still in the fridge? (Exactly.)
🗑️ Time for a Product Audit
Here’s your glow-up homework:
-
As a general rule of thumb most unopened products will last about 2 years if stored properly. Opened products will last 6-12 months and products with performance ingredients (AHA’s, Retinols, Vit C, Peptides etc.) should be used up in 3-6 months for full efficacy, otherwise whats the point.
-
Toss anything that looks, smells, or feels different than it used to.
-
Be ruthless with old makeup too — mascaras and eyeliners are bacterial playgrounds after 3–6 months.
-
Store your products in a cool, dark place to extend their life.
✨ Your Skin Will Thank You
Clearing out your old products isn’t just organizing — it’s an act of self-care. You’re making room for what actually works and setting your skin (and your results) up for success.
So, take a moment to de-clutter those bathroom vanities and skincare shelves. Your skin will glow brighter for it.
P.S. Not sure what’s still serving your skin? Bring your products to your next appointment, and I’ll help you sort through what to keep, what to toss, and what might need a modern upgrade. Let’s make sure every product on your shelf is actually working for your skin.
