Have you ever wondered what gives your skin that dewy glow?

It’s not a big secret…it’s moisture!

It doesn’t matter if you have dry or oily skin, it needs moisture!

Moisturizers are unsung superheros in the skincare world when it comes to achieving that oh-so-desirable radiant glow. There are three main types of moisturizers that do different things for your skin.

Humectants: Your Skin’s Thirst Quencher

If your skin is dehydrated and lacking moisture, humectants are your skin’s ultimate BFFs. They attract moisture like a magnet by pulling moisture from the air into your skin. Humectants typically have a small molecular size and can easily penetrate down into the skin. Some of my favorites are glycerin and hyaluronic acid.

Emollients: The Smooth Operators

Emollients come in the form of creams, gels, lotions and ointments and are used to smooth out roughness. These smooth operators work their magic by softening and soothing your skin, ensuring that it stays plump and supple. Say hello to reduced roughness and flakiness, great for skin that are lacking in natural oils. Common emollients include lipids and oils, colloidal oatmeal and shea butter.

Occlusives: The Protective Guardians

Occlusives have got you covered! These protective guardians form a barrier on the skin’s surface, sealing in all the goodness and preventing moisture loss, while also protecting the skin from external irritants. Common occlusive agents include waxes ( beeswax), silicone, oils (olive and soybean), dimethicone, lanolin, mineral oil and white petrolatum.

Although these guys work a little differently on the skin they all play well together in the sandbox and are all great to have in your skincare regimen. You can think of emollients, humectants and occlusives as layers of a hydrating skincare sandwich. Humectants will draw moisture from the air into the skin. Emollients and occlusives lock in the moisture that humectants attract. You can layer emollients on top of humectants and apply an occlusive on top if your skin is extra dry… did someone say “slugging”!

Here’s to embracing the magic of skincare and unveiling your skin’s natural radiance. Until next time, stay glowing and keep on shining!
