Many clients have asked me if I take a collagen supplement, I do and for many reasons.
Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body. Its fiber-like structure is used to make connective tissue; this type of tissue connects other tissues and is a major component of bone, skin, muscles, tendons, and cartilage. One of the main causes of aging skin is loss of collagen. So why does it decline and what we do about it?
Some reasons are out of your control, but some aren’t and you can take back control!
U.V. Exposure – I mean it when I say wearing sunscreen is a must! U.V. rays can cause DNA damage to the cells that make collagen. Don’t even get me started on free radicals and oxidative stress :(
Age – collagen production dips as early as the 20’s!
Smoking – the amount of oxygen delivered to tissue decreases when we smoke causing tissue damage having a negative affect on collagen production. Quitting is hard, finding support is important.
Inflammation – causes damage to almost all cells and systems in the body. Eat your veggies and limit sugar, processed foods and alcohol.
Stress – can lead to inflammation which leads to a decrease in collagen. Remember to breathe, get good sleep and practice self care on a regular basis.
And of course there is also good old genetics.
So…what can we do?
Problem: Collagen is a large molecule, making it hard to pass through the skin for absorption. Therefore making it hard for any topical collagen cream to actually work.
Solution: Take a collagen supplement. I personally take Thrive Elite Collagen and love it!!! It is a liquid marine based collagen and you only need 1/2 tablespoon everyday…plus it has a super yummy mint chocolate flavor. I have it the skin studio if you want to know more about or try it out for yourself.
Adding a Peptide (amino acids that make up proteins like collagen) Serums and Creams and Retinol (vitamin A) serums is a must have for any age management home care regimen. Both are molecularly small enough to penetrate the top layers of skin and increase collagen production for a firmer, younger looking skin.
You can also…
Work on getting good sleep, eat well, get help to quit smoking, and move your body.
Wear your Sunscreen (I can help you in that department)
Some treatments I offer at the studio, such as microcurrent and LED light therapy also increase collagen production in the skin.
Unfortunately, you can’t start worrying about being 50 at 50, start early and reap the rewards. Taking care of your skin and body is a life long practice, make it a priority and make it fun.
